How to Wax Your Car in 4 Easy Steps

Besides making your car look great by enhancing its paintwork, a good coat of wax also works to protect its exterior from the effects of aging and weathering. • STEP 1: Park your vehicle in the shade.

It can be extremely uncomfortable for anyone to wax their car under the scorching heat of the sun. For this reason, you’ll want to work during a cool and non-humid day. However, if this isn’t possible, be sure to find some shade and park your car in it.

• STEP 2: Wash your car.

Use warm water to rinse off as much dirt and debris as you can before you scrub off the rest of the contaminants with a sponge soaked in dish soap. Remember to work from the top of your car down. After rinsing off the soap, be sure to use a chamois or a few towels to dry your car completely. Don’t forget to check above the rear license plate, under the window trim, around the grille, and the side mirrors for drips.

• STEP 3. Apply the wax.

If you prefer to do this by hand, you’ll need two soft pads, some microfibers, and wax. Before you begin, be sure to read the guidelines printed on the wax bottle. Shake the bottle well and apply a nickel-sized layer of wax to one side of a soft pad and start working on about 2 by 2 feet of one panel of your vehicle. Try to get a thin film of wax on the entire painted surface by pressing down the waxed pad gently but firmly on the paint in small circular motions.

Cover all painted surfaces as you work your way around your car while making sure that the wax doesn’t touch any plastic, rubber, or unpainted spots. Touch up unwaxed painted sections and switch to the other soft pad if the first pad becomes saturated with wax.

• STEP 4. Buff the wax off.

Grab a dry microfiber towel and fold it into fourths before using it to buff the wax off with a back-and-forth motion to avoid swirling on your vehicle. When the wax builds up on your microfiber towel, flip over the towel to its clean side or switch microfibers.
