How Long Does It Usually Take for Hair to Grow Back after Chemo?

One of the most common effects of chemotherapy is hair loss. Not only does the treatment kill cancer cells, but it also destroys healthy cells, including those in the hair follicles.

Although no chemo patient can avoid hair loss after undergoing treatment, the good news is that many of them can get their hair back. Depending on the type of chemo drugs used, some may experience hair regrowth in less than a month, while it may take longer for others. Very rarely does permanent baldness occur, and if it does, it usually takes place after several years of strong chemotherapy.

When Does Hair Loss Normally Occur?

In most cases, chemo patients lose their hair within two weeks of treatment. For a month or two, patients will experience hair loss on their heads, brows, eyelashes, private parts, and other areas of their body. Unfortunately for those treated with certain drugs like docetaxel, hair loss may be permanent.

Hair Regrowth Varies

Since chemotherapy drugs take a lot of time to leave the body, healthy cells are still unable to reproduce after the treatment. This means that hair won’t grow back immediately after each chemo procedure.

What everyone needs to know is that hair regrowth varies from patient to patient, depending on factors such as health, age, and even ethnicity.

Two or three weeks after their last chemo, most patients will notice a small amount of soft fuzzy hair. Thick hair starts to grow usually a month or two later. After six months, bald patches may already be covered by two to three inches of hair. Patients with short hair may then be able to sport their original hairstyle.

A year later, patients may find their hair growing back four to six inches, or long enough to brush it. For individuals with longer hair, it will take years before they can get their previous style back.

It’s not uncommon for chemo patients to grow back hair with a different color or texture. Some might have hair that’s curlier or thicker than their old hair, while others might be surprised to see a much straighter hair.
