Understanding Breast Cancer

Breast cancer starts when cells begin to grow out of control in the breast and form a tumor. Most cases of breast cancer start in the ducts that carry milk to the nipple. This is called ductal cancer. Another type of breast cancer starts in the glands that produce breast milk, and this is called lobular cancer.

Not all lumps felt in the breast area, however, can lead to cancer. Some lumps are just abnormal growths that do not spread and are harmless. Breast lumps nonetheless might increase the risks of getting breast cancer. Hence, people who have these lumps are advised to consult with a doctor for a thorough checking.

Breast cancer can be fatal when cancer cells spread to the blood or lymph system, which can be carried to other parts of the body. The more lymph nodes with cancer cells are found in the breasts, the higher chances of cancer cells finding their way to other organs.

Breast Cancer Statistics in the United States

One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, according to National Breast Cancer.org. Each year it is estimated that over 252,710 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,500 will die. On average, every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and 1 woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes

That is why we at Breast Cancer Car Donations are striving hard to generate more funds so that we could help provide medical assistance to as many breast cancer patients as our resources can afford to enable them to beat the disease.

Earliest Recorded Breast Cancer Cases

Cancer has been afflicting humans since the dawn of history. Breast cancer was first recorded in ancient Egypt in 1600 BC on the famous papyrus that manuscript dealer Edwin Smith bought in 1862. The ancient text describes eight cases of tumors or ulcers of the breast that were removed by cauterization with a tool called the fire drill. The text noted that the disease has “no treatment.”

The first successful treatment of breast cancer was made by Dr. William Halsted who performed the first radical mastectomy at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in 1882.  This surgical operation became a standard procedure until the 20th century. In 1895, the first x-ray was taken to detect breast cancer; it was later on called as mammograms.
